Judge Associate

The Associates duty is to be adhered to monitor and manage Judges cases from start to finish.

Here is a depiction of the life cycle of a case from filing to disposal, showing the points where the Associate would work to assist the Judge.

Matter allocated to Judge

  • Associate monitor and manage Judges case schedules and advises Judge matters has been allocated and provides file/ case brief summary of what each matter is about to Judge.

Case Management

  • Associate liaises with parties regarding case management: listings; draft orders etc.
  • Associate finalizes any orders with instructions from Judge and coordinates hearing dates in Judge’s matter to Judge before hearing.

Substantive Hearing

  • Associate making sure files and all required documents are in order and placed in file.
  • Associate liaise with Lawyers and court registry staff to have all matters for substantive hearing are ready and listed for hearing.
  • Associate notify interested parties of hearing dates.
  • Associate provides summary of all matters to Judge before hearing.

Writing Judgment

  • Associate assists Judge in judgment writing by: drafting summary/ background; summarizing evidence; and proofing final judgment.
  • Where and when required by Judge, Associate is request by judge to discuss matters and give legal opinion as required.

Judgment Delivery

  • Associate finalize Judgment for delivery, prints, sends to parties and finalizes orders and endorsement.
  • Associate liaise with Registry regarding closing matter.

  • Associate’s day - to – day activities vary depending on Judge’s calendar and schedules and Judge’s preference.
  • Associate arrives before Judge and going through emails and calendar to see what Judge’s Day involves.
  • Associate will then create Associate “to-do-list”.
  • When Judge arrives, associate will discuss any emails that need to be addressed (in order of priority).p
  • Associate may then assist Judge in getting ready for Court by preparing Courtroom and making sure Judges books are ready, files are ready, and lawyers are ready before Judge enters Court.
  • Associate will provide brief summary of all matter to be heard and hand brief summary to Judge.
  • Judge will then study these files to get himself or herself ready and familiarize with the case.
  • After Court, associate will endorse the file and update any electronic version of the matter as required.
  • Associate will take notes and will keep summary of what occurred during the hearing (and can provide a legal opinion if the Judge asks for one).
  • Judge may desire time to write Judgement or deal with matters. During this time, associate will stay on top of emails and will continue to draft summary/ background and summaries evidence for any reserved Judgments that the team is working on.
  • If Judge has any meetings, depending on what they are, associate must be available to attend and assist in whatever capacity Judge requires: i.e., setting up for a meeting, taking notes or actively participating in meeting.
  • Associate is required to remain in Chambers until Judge leaves and assisting and providing support as and when required.
