  • Lead a team of six field staff responsible for facilitating community mapping to understand socio-economic impacts and to develop activities that would support communities to manage any potential impact
  • This included facilitating community forums and analysis of the socio-economic issues likely to be faced during construction, and developing means to address and or manage the issues
  • Responsibility also included building organisational capacity by developing and delivering in-house sessions with team and other functions on project planning, monitoring, evaluation and implementation, and developing systems and processes that would establish the foundations for the Community Development programs to be implemented when construction started more intensively

  • Company Overview: The CDI Foundation was established in 2001, by the operator of the Kutubu oil fields, Chevron Niugini (now OilSearch Limited), as a mechanism for delivering social development initiatives in the Project impact area in the Southern Highlands of PNG
  • My main role as the leader in the formative years was to develop organisational systems and processes to ensure the organisations independence from the petroleum operations
  • CDI Foundation has grown to become an organisation that promotes sustainable community development through the operation of public health, education and training, agricultural programmes with staff in training centers in Port Moresby, Moro, Kikori and Samberigi
  • The CDI Foundation also operated an FM radio station
  • In the operational years, my role as the Executive Director included taking responsibility for conducting in-house training to build the capacity of CDI staff to work with stakeholders on participatory design approaches
  • I led the internal processes that set the operational and strategic direction of CDI including designing and facilitating quarterly planning meetings and annual staff planning and strategic planning and facilitated the annual major program evaluations for four programs (Agriculture Extension; Community Education, Public Health Natural Resource Conservation & Capacity Building) and commissioned and participated in two reviews of CDI operations to determine CDI's strategic direction and as a basis for negotiating with CDI's major donor, the Joint Venture Participants of the Petroleum Development Project in Kutubu
  • This also included setting up three training and office facilities in Samberigi, Kikori and Port Moresby, and a Consultancy service program that helped to generate approximately 1.2 million per annum for CDI's operating costs supplementing what was received through program and project funding from key donors

  • After 6 months, the Deputy Director Position was created to prepare me to take the Executive Director position which was a seconded position from Chevron
  • After an understudy of 3 months of a Chevron management position I took on the Executive Director position with no more seconded positions
  • The foundation was managed independently from the petroleum operations with the Executive Director reporting to a Board comprised of JVP representatives and independent Board members
