I won an Australian Awards (DFAT) PhD Research scholarship to research multiphase flow using CFD for the first time at the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic engineering in Sydney, between 2018 and 2022.
  • Full time PhD research student conducting research at the University of Sydney in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in Two-Phase Flow for the thesis titled “Numerical Simulation of Flow Parameter in Stratified Gas-Liquid Flow in a Horizontal Pipe” using CFD code-FLUENT. Methodology in brief as follows;
  • Used ANSYS-FLUENT DesignModeler to design 3D Pipe Models & created a flow domain based on ‘test rig’ pipe dimension.
  • Used ANSYS-FLUENT Meshing to mesh the Pipe Geometry for computation.
  • Finite Volume Method was used to discretise governing equations in the flow domain
  • VOF model was employed to track the interface in pipe geometry/flow domain.
  • K-ω SST turbulence model was used to address turbulence in the flow field.
  • FLUENT Post-processing and MATLAB/Excel were used to analyse results.

  • Company Overview: I was employed by Parsons Brinckerhoff Global Mining Group now WSP based in Adelaide Office as a Construction Manager at the start of the project and as Senior Project Engineer/Construction Manager during construction, commissioning and handover phase. I was working as part of an EPCM leadership team for this brand new Mineral Sand Separation Plant project at Broken Hill in New South Wales for Client Cristal Mining limited (formerly Bemax Resources Limited). My involvement commences at the detail design stage with design engineers and coordination of procurement of equipment suppliers, contractors and sub-consultants, particularly fire engineering services to the new process facilities including the existing plant as part of the fire studies.

Senior Project Engineer - Mine Infrastructure (Karara Iron Ore Project)

I was employed as a senior project engineer-infrastructure to work on the Karara Iron Ore Project in WA within the Minerals & Metal CSG. The Karara Project was a Greenfield project valued at A$2 billion dollars.
  • My responsibilities were as follows;

  • Achievements on the Karara Iron Ore Project:
  • 120 Person Karara Exploration Camp; I wrote both Scope of Work and specification for the 120 person Exploration Camp including management of layout and site services design by other consultants. This Project was estimated at A$3.0 million Dollar and constructed by Contractor PINDAN Contracting. I managed the entire project including site services design and design review and squad check within the project team and finally installation and commissioning as a Project Manager. Construction started in April 2008 and completed and handed over to Customer Gindalbie Metals in December 2008.
  • Karara Mobile Concrete Batch Plant; I wrote both Concrete Specification and Scope of Work for the establishment and operation of a Concrete Batch Plant to produce different concrete grade up to 85 000 cubic meters of concrete in volume for the Karara Iron Ore Project. This is the total volume of concrete required for the entire project from Primary and Secondary Crusher foundation, both Hematite and Magnetite process plant foundation, all conveyor footings to camps and future village for the mine operational personnel. Bid evaluation done by contract engineer and myself and contract awarded to Boral. Site mobilization and installation of mobile batch plant was proposed for October 2009.
  • 300 Person Lochada Construction Camp; I wrote both Scope of Work and specification for the 300-person Construction Camp for the Karara Iron Ore Project including layout and site services design for the entire camp as a Package engineer to tender level. The total Project cost estimation was A$7.5 Million dollars to be constructed in the early part 2010.
  • Karara Fuel Supply, Storage, Distribution & Hydrocarbon Separation facility; I wrote both Scope of Works and Specifications for the Fuel Supply, Storage and distribution facilities with fuel dispenser units including hydrocarbon separation facility for the construction phase of the project to tender level. The Hydrocarbon Separation facility was my own innovative design which incorporated storm water and sediments separation and removal chamber apart from the hydrocarbons. Total project cost valued at A$2 million dollar. I was the Package Engineer for this project.

Project Engineer (Iron Ore Mine)

Pilbara Iron Pty Ltd – Rio Tinto Iron Ore Group, Australia.

  • Company Overview: Operates and maintains mining, rail and export facilities in the northwest of Western Australia on behalf of asset owners, Hamersley Iron and Robe River Iron Associates. I was employed as a Project Engineer at a senior level.
  • My responsibilities were as follows;
  • Coordinating and managing consulting engineers, Contractors and Project officers working on my projects within Greater Paraburdoo operation for Rio Tinto. Occasionally, I stepped into the role of Superintendent Project Engineering Paraburdoo in his absence.
  • Researched & prepare proposals / conceptual designs for identified problems and presentation to Key Stakeholders such as Mine, Maintenance & Plant Operation.
  • Prepare status reports, project plans & prepare project reports for Management and end users.
  • Nominated as a Mentor for Graduate engineers under the Rio Tinto Graduate development program at Paraburdoo mine site for the year 2007 and 2008.
  • Achievements since March 2006 until June 2008:
  • Paraburdoo Fines Plant-Tailings Pipeline and Valves Upgrade project; Engineering design by Calibre Projects in Perth. I was involved in the review of construction drawings, the site layout design, specification and scope of work for this portion of the Fines Plant Optimizing projects. Construction work carried out by RCR and ICM Electrical Services and completed in July 2008. I was seconded to Calibre Projects to oversee the installation and commissioning of the project. I was also tasked to update the overall progress of the A$40 Million dollar Paraburdoo Fines Plant Optimizing projects into the Rio Tinto Collaborative Forum (RTCF) to manage the change process. The Pilbara Iron Change Management Forum uses Rio Tinto Collaborative Forum (RTCF) which ensures that the change process is followed. I successfully completed this tasked to a Final Review Phase before I left for WorleyParsons Services in Perth.
  • Eastern Range/Channar Transfer Station (CV603/CV555); I did concept design of the wash-down pad, Silt Trap, Pump sump design and selected two submersible slurry pumps. I put together the contract specification for mechanical, electrical as well as civil works. Detail civil and structural engineering design and Scope of Work by Cardno Buckland Engineers in Perth and mechanical and electrical Scope of Works done on site by me. Capital expenditure application to a value of $480,000 was submitted and approved. Construction works began in February 2008 by Mobectre Construction and ICM Electrical Services and completed in March 2008. I was the Project Manager.
  • Paraburdoo Train Load-out Conveyor 25 Take-Up System Modification; This project was highly critical in that it was shut down related and involved designing a new take-up tower, take-up box, sheaves, take-up trolley, take-up pulley & Plummer bearings, lubrication system, winch, wire rope and new layout design for CV25 all based on my concept design and Specifications. Detail structural design by Cardno Buckland Engineers and mechanical layout design by myself. I reviewed and approved design, drawings and scope of work for construction. The CEA by me to a value of $861,000 was approved. Construction works began in November 2007 by Bilfinger Berger Services & Supracure in stages and finally completed in January 2008 as part of a 3 days shut down work. I was the Project Manager from design to installation and commissioning and handover.
  • Eastern Range Light Vehicle Mine Access Road; I managed the design of the 2 kilometers access road to the cost estimate of A$1.7 million dollar and the installation of Culverts for the access road and associated earthworks to a value of $560, 000. The total project cost estimate was A$2.3 million dollars. The CEA for culvert installation approved and construction began in Nov 2007 and completed in December 2007 by GLH of Geraldton. I wrote both the scope of work and specification for earthworks. The Light Vehicle access road was designed by consulting firm Cardno Buckland Engineers of Perth. I was the Project Manager.
  • Paraburdoo-Truck Shop Tool Shed; I did the Design layout, put together Specification and Scope of Work. CEA submitted by me and approved to a value of $96000. Highline in Perth fabricated the building material according to my specification and transported to site for installation. Contract awarded to Monadelphous and installation works began in Feb 2007 and completed in April 2007. I was the Project Manager from design to implementation.
  • Paraburdoo-Bio Farm Modification Work; Modification work to pump station 2 and settling pond for hydrocarbon separation. I carried out the detail engineering design and put together the Scope of Work and approved for construction by site based environmental officer. CEA was submitted and approved to a value of $133,000. Contract awarded to GFR, construction began in Feb 2007 and completed in March 2007. I managed this project as Project Manager.
  • Paraburdoo-Gas Turbine Diesel Fuel Transfer Line project; Detail engineering design by PCT Engineers. I reviewed and approved for construction the design layout and Scope of Works for the entire projects based on Rio Tinto standard design Specification. Capital Expenditure Application (CEA) submitted by me and approved to a value of $770,000. Construction began in November 2006 by Monadelphous and completed in December 2006. I managed this project as a Project Manager for the installation, commissioning including pressure testing.
  • Paraburdoo-CV555/CV604 transfer station; I carried out concept design of the wash-down pad, Silt Trap, pump sump design and selected the two submersible slurry pumps. I put together contract specification for mechanical, electrical and civil works. Detail engineering design and Scope of Work by me and electrical Scope of Works done on site managed by me. CEA approved to a value of $400,575. Construction works began in November by Byblos & ICM Electrical and completed in December 2006. I was the Project Manager.

  • I was employed as a Team Leader Engineering. My responsibilities were as follows;
  • Leading, coordinating and managing a multi-national team of professional engineers, technical project officer, construction supervisors and draftsmen within Engineering & Construction division of OTML.

  • My Achievements as a Project Leader:
  • West Bank/Bige Fuel Storage, Distribution & Hydrocarbon Separation Facility; The West Bank-Bige Diesel Fuel Storage, Oil/Water & Storm water separator and Distribution Facility with fuel bowser units to supply fuel to trucks and light vehicle supporting the dredging operation on the West Bank side of the Ok Tedi River. I managed the project as a Design Engineer to a value of A$560,000 while working as a Team Leader Engineering.
  • Tabubil Thermal Power Plants Hydrocarbon Separation Facility; Tabubil Diesel & Gas Turbine Thermal Power Plants oil/ water and storm water separation and sediment removal facility. I designed as hydraulics engineer (environmental related project) including catchment evaluation, flowrate estimation and sizing of the canal or drain system and water level using Manning stickler correlation. The design also includes settling basin or sand trap for sediment removal. I managed this project as Project Manager to a value of A$500,000 while working as a Team Leader Engineering.
  • Mine Site Process and Potable Water Supply Project; Mill/Mine Potable water supply & Treatment plant and Process Water Supply and source Management project for Ok Tedi Mine. I lead the design team as Hydraulics Engineer & Project Manager. I managed the engineering design component of the project to a value of A$2 Million Dollars while working as a Team Leader Engineering.

Mechanical Engineer – Projects (Gold Mine)

Barrick Gold (PNG) Ltd - Porgera Joint Venture (PJV), PNG.

  • Company Overview: PJV is Barrick Gold largest Gold Mining Operation in the Southern Hemisphere located in PNG and operates both surface and underground mine. Majority owned and managed by Barrick Gold of Canada. It has 4 Autoclaves and 3 Cryogenic plants- a very complex gold processing operation in Australasia.
  • I was employed as a Mechanical Project Engineer. My responsibilities were as follows;
  • Researched & prepare proposals / conceptual designs for identified problems for Mill, Maintenance & Mine.
  • Prepare status reports, project plans & prepare project reports for Senior Mechanical Engineer, Client and others.
  • Maintaining safe working practices for subordinates and proactively motivating and maintaining moral of subordinates (draftees).
  • Major achievements were:
  • Hydraulic Waste Oil Reclamation; I completed a feasibility study for Hydraulic Waste Oil reclamation project. It cost PJV A$1.3 million annually for hydraulic oil on site. Project completed and equipment presently in operation at Porgera mine resulted in savings of A$911,338 per year for PJV.
  • Waste Oil Treatment Project; I completed a feasibility study for waste Oil treatment, Storage and Usage on Site as fuel oil or diesel extender & selling fuel oil to other users. Project resulted in savings of A$203,806 annually for both disposal of waste oil off site and transportation cost of reclaimable hydraulic oil on site.
  • Inch Drive System for Sag Mill & Ball Mill; I completed a feasibility study for the installation of Inching Drive System for the Ball Mills & Sag Mills. Currently the equipment is in operation at Porgera mine resulted in the savings of A$220,439 per Mill shut down.
  • Centralise Grease System for Rock Breaker & Primary Crusher; I conducted a feasibility study for installation of a Centralise Grease System for the Primary Crusher spider bush and the Rock Breaker unit. The main benefits from this study will be the application of one grease type for both units from a common canister resulting in savings in transportation cost from different brand from vendors to the site.
  • Primary Crusher; I managed maintenance and supervised modification and reinstallation work of the Primary Crusher (gyratory) and associated components including installation of spider bush on the existing primary crusher as an understudy to an expatriate including complete revision of the Specification.
  • Sag Mill 1 Sump Pumps; I designed and supervised modification and installation of Sump pumps, walkways under Sag Mill 1 and Ball Mill 1 to 3 including modification works to the respective Hydro-cyclones. I also revised the Sump pumps Specification.
  • Micro Hydropower Generation Scheme; I completed a pre-feasibility study for a 13 kW Micro Hydropower generation scheme for a small station in PNG Southern Highlands Province for Porgera Joint Venture Community Affairs Department.

  • Company Overview: An Australian owned Brisbane based consulting engineering firm with offices throughout PNG and Australia. I associated with Cardno since 1995 as a Contract Engineer under my own business name WC Buckhill Mechanical & Hydraulic Engineers in PNG. Under Cardno recommendation, I obtained two years AusAID scholarship to study at the University of NSW in Sydney. However, I was in full time employment with an airline HeviLift in Bougainville as a fixed wing Pilot.
  • I worked as Hydraulic Engineer. My responsibilities were as follows;
  • Pre-feasibility Studies; Promotions and marketing of Mini/Micro Hydropower Technology in rural PNG through Desk Studies & pre-feasibility studies for Mission & Government stations for potential funding by government agencies and other donor agencies for advance study at the feasibility level and detail design.
  • Feasibility Studies; Prepare detail designs for the selected hydro sites, developing scope of works and contract specification, detail construction and installation drawings. Prepare tender documents and bid evaluation. Assist project owners in the promotion for International donor agencies such as AusAID, GTZ & Japanese AID to fund the implementation, construction, installation and commissioning and handover.

  • Kubuna Micro Hydroelectric Scheme; Completed a desktop studies for an 85 kW Micro Hydropower generation scheme for a small station in PNG Central Province for Commonwealth Development Corporation – Port Moresby.
  • Karimui Mini Hydropower Scheme; Completed a Desk top Study for the proposed 250 kW Karimui Mini Hydropower Scheme in the Chimbu Province of Papua New Guinea commissioned by the Department of Simbu.

I was in fulltime employment since 1995 until 1997. Between 1997 and 1998, I worked on a part time basis while in full time employment with Airline company-Islands Nationalair as a fixed-wing Pilot based at Lihir Island supporting the new Gold Mine construction.

  • Bank of South Pacific Lending Facilities, Gordons; Supervised mechanical services installation such as air ducts, refrigerant pipes, air conditioning units, ventilation and toilet extraction fans, fire & smoke detectors and fire hydrants in the new two-story office complex. I was employed as a Mechanical Engineer in Port Moresby.
  • Nambawan Finance & Vulupindu House, Waigani; Designed air duct and flexible duct layout, selection of fire dampers and fire rated walls for fit-out job for two new high rise buildings recently commissioned (both 6 stories buildings) along Waigani.

Project Mechanical Engineer (Mini/Micro Hydropower Generation)

  • Company Overview: DED was a PNG Government Department responsible for promotion and development of renewal energy in rural PNG between 1991 and 1995. I was attached to the Energy division responsible for Hydropower and Solar powered water supply system. In 1993, I was recruited to work for DED.
  • I worked as a project engineer-mechanical. My achievements were as follows;
  • Kubuna Solar Powered Water Supply Scheme; I carried out detail design and put together Scope of Work and supervised installation of a borehole Solar Powered Water Supply and distribution system for Kubuna Catholic Mission station in the Central Province of PNG.
  • Simbai Micro Hydroelectric Scheme; I was part of the team of engineers involved in the detail design of the 62 kW Micro-Hydropower generation scheme in the Madang Province of PNG. I was responsible for the following components; head race canal design, forebay and penstock design, power house design, turbine and gear drive design and selection, generator selection. I wrote the Feasibility report with inputs from the other discipline.

  • Company Overview: An Australian owned PNG based air-conditioning mechanical services contractor and distributor of Daikin Air Conditioning equipment in PNG.
  • I worked as a Graduate Mechanical Engineer. My achievements were as follows;
  • Port General Hospital, 3 Mile; I managed the successful completion of the Redevelopment of Port Moresby General Hospital. Works carried out on the Project includes system design, selection of air conditioning units for dual duct system, Ducting diagram and supervising installation and commissioning of equipment and preparation of operation and maintenance manual.
  • Bank of South Pacific, Waigani; I was involved in completing a three stories Bank of South Pacific Waigani branch in Port Moresby. Works carried out on the project included system design, air ducts and piping sizing and layout design, selection of air conditioning units and fan coil units and air balance to all outlets. I supervised installation and commissioning of all equipment.
  • Gate Way Hotel, Jackson Airport; I was involved in completing a two stories Hotel at Jackson’s Airport in Port Moresby for Steamship Trading of PNG. Works carried out on the project included system design, air ducts and piping sizing and layout design, selection of air conditioning units, packaged chillers units, pumps and fan coil units. Supervising installation and commissioning of all equipment.
  • Credit Corporation Seven Story Building, Port Moresby CBD; I was involved in a successful completion of a seven stories high rise building in Port Moresby for Credit Corporation of PNG. Works carried out on the Project included system design, selection of air conditioning units (VRV system), Stairwell pressurisation system, Lift motor room air-conditioning, supervising installation and commissioning of equipment and preparation of operation and maintenance manual.
